Making homemade alternatives for usually store bought items is becoming a trend at our house and I really suggest you do the same in at least some cases, because it’s quick and easy! My latest homemade alternative is an oven fry mix I used when baking pork chops a couple nights ago. I usually buy the box of Oven Fry at the grocery store, but this time decided to look for a recipe and make my own. Since I’m posting it on my blog, you know it was delicious! (Yes, I make my fair share of meals, snacks and desserts that don’t turn out quite as expected and therefore don’t make an appearance on my blog! 🙂 ) We actually decided we liked this homemade version much better than the store bought oven fry…not much of a surprise!
The recipe below will make enough for multiple meals! I cut the recipe in half and still have some in our pantry for next time. I used a heaping (because it spilled out quicker than I anticipated!) half cup of the mix for our four average sized pork chops. I haven’t tried this on chicken, but I assume it would be pretty good on that as well! Enjoy!!
Homemade Oven Fry Mix
Ingredients:
- 3 cups bread crumbs
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1 Tbsp salt (I only used 1/2 tbsp)
- 1 Tbsp dried onion flakes (I didn’t have this and substituted onion powder)
- 3 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper
- ½ tsp dry parsley
- ½ tsp dry basil
- ½ tsp dry oregano
Instructions:
- Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and stir until evenly mixed and bread crumbs are no longer clumping together from the oil.
- Pour into a mason jar or other airtight container and store in the pantry for 1-2 months.
As always, thanks for reading!!
